Moonstone is characterized by a colorless, semitransparent to nearly transparent appearance coupled with a blue adularescence also called blue sheen in trade.



Typically, a moonstone should have little to no inclusion and be as transparent as possible because inclusions can interfere with the adularescence.



Moonstones are usually cut into cabochons in order to maximize the sheen of the gemstone. Larger transparent moonstones will drive higher prices due to the rarity.

How is a Moonstone formed?
  • The formation of Moonstone is owed to the natural processes of hydro-thermal and volcanic activity.  
  • The emergence of the gemstone happens when the stone comes in contact with water and magma. When exposed to water, the magma gets settled down. The minerals are then combined to form crystals which we call moonstones. 
What is the difference between lab grown and natural Moonstones?
  • Like most of the gemstones, there is an option to choose between natural and lab-created Moonstones.  
  • One must not confuse “lab grown” with the “fake”. The replica of the natural gemstone when grown in a lab maintaining the necessary environmental conditions. 
  • Moonstones whether natural or lab grown are made from the same base elements and hence are indistinguishable by hardness and physical properties.

The moonstones are obtained from various locations in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar, Brazil, Australia and India.

How to take care of Moonstone ring?

Moonstone ring is quite easy to clean due to their hardness and durability. However, a few things must be kept in mind like avoiding contact of the gemstone with make-up, harsh chemicals, abrasives. 

hile cleaning the ring take use of lukewarm water and mild cleaning detergent. Soft toothbrush can be used to clean the underside of the Moonstone. Also, the ring must be individually kept to avoid contact with other jewelry to avoid unnecessary scratches.
